iWave launched the IW-G39RH human machine interface series for tough operating conditions. Kontron introduced the Pi-Tron CM4 single-board computer based on Raspberry Pi. Both devices offer CAN FD connectivity.

Powered by the i.MX 8M Mini processor from NXP, the IP67-protected, aluminum-housing touch-panels with multiple mounting options are available in 7-inch and 10,1-inch variants. The M12 IP67-rated water-proof connectors, sunlight-readable screen, operating temperatures from -20 °C to +65 °C, and 9-VDC to 36-VDC input voltage make the devices suitable for outside installations. The HMIs (human-machine interfaces) can be used as monitor screens or control panels in mining, agriculture equipment, construction machinery, marine equipment, locomotives, and warehouse machinery. The solution can be customized for remote monitoring and diagnostic applications. Beside CAN FD, the connectivity options include an analog video input, EIA-485, USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth interfaces. An M.2 expansion slot is provisioned for extended storage or cellular connectivity, camera, wireless modules, and sensors. For development of customized applications, Linux and Android SDKs (software development kits), software drivers, and BSPs (board support package) are offered. Protocol stacks for J1939, CANopen, UDS, ISO 11992, ISO 11783, and NMEA 2000 are available as well.

Kontron’s Pi-Tron CM4 computer is based the fourth-generation Raspberry Pi compute module with the 1,5-GHz, 64-bit Broadcom BCM2711 SOC (system on chip) and four Arm Cortex-A72 processors. Computer’s steel-housing allows for universal use e.g. in industrial applications. Depending on the variant, it provides a 1-GiB, 2-GB, 4-GiB, or 8-GiB SDRAM memory with options up to 32 GiB using the eMMC card. Offered interfaces include CAN FD, EIA-485, a 40-pin GPIO (general-purpose IO) header, a HDMI slot as well as an LVDS display connector via an adapter board. Additionally, an optional pre-certified wireless LAN/Bluetooth connection is possible. An M.2 B key slot with PCIe connection enables the use of corresponding standard modules. For example, individual AI (artificial intelligence) solutions for machine vision and machine/deep learning can be implemented with the Hailo-8 AI modules or the Google Coral AI Edge TPU (tensor processing unit). For the integration into IoT solutions, the computer has been prepared to use LTE modules with SIM cards and an external antenna connection.

A big advantage of the Raspberry Pi single-board computer is its large community. Many software examples and a pool of compiled program packages are available for installation. The Pi-Tron CM4 only uses some software components supported by the community. A number of expansion modules based on the GPIO header is also a valuable part of the ecosystem.
