Kvaser launched the Hybrid CAN/LIN and Hybrid Pro CAN/LIN interfaces. The CAN hard- and software provider also supports global educational and research projects.

The introduced interfaces connect a PC to Classical CAN, CAN FD, or LIN with a USB connector on one side and a CAN/LIN channel with a 9-pin D-Sub connector on the other. The latter channel is switchable for either CAN (FD) or LIN (up to 20 kbit/s). CAN FD support for bit rates up to 5 Mbit/s is possible, if a proper physical layer implementation is considered. The interfaces can be deployed e.g. in networks using J1939, CANopen, NMEA 2000, Devicenet and other higher-layer protocols. The Pro version offers advanced features such as support for silent mode (listen only), error frame detection and generation as well as company’s Magisync automatic clock synchronization. The last feature synchronizes timestamps across multiple Magisync-enabled devices without additional wires.

The units are capable of sending up to 20 000 messages per second and can be installed in a plug-and-play manner. The power is taken from the USB line. LED lights inform the user about the device status. The operating temperature can range from -40 °C to +85 °C. The devices are supplied with Kvaser CANlib and LINlib free software APIs (application programming interface) that are common to all Kvaser hardware and available for download on the manufacturer’s website.

Located in Manyoni, Tanzania, VTC Mechanic School is a three-year program teaching the vehicle’s mechanical troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance to young adults. The students come from impoverished backgrounds, hoping to learn a trade that will improve their income and lives, as electronics skills are highly-valued by future employers.

To acquire some skills regarding electronic components within vehicles, the learners were supported by Zuragon and Kvaser. The companies supplied the school with a laptop vehicle diagnostic system consisting of ViCANdo software (Zuragon) and a Kvaser Memorator Pro 2xHS v2 interface. With it, the students will learn to diagnose issues by installing the interface in a vehicle and capturing drive data for post-analysis by ViCANdo. Initially the data will be off-loaded to an SD card, with the expectation that Tanzania’s 3G network can be used for remote vehicle diagnostics in the future. Founded in 2007 Zuragon employs experts in design, development, and testing of vehicle networks. The company’s ViCANdo test environment synchronously captures in-vehicle data (e.g., J1939-based, diagnostics, proprietary) along with multi-media sources such as GPS, acoustics, internal and external video sources, measurement equipment, thermal, eye-tracking, bio-sensors, etc. The post-analysis reveals correlations among the captured data. The results are used to advance customers’ product design, development, durability, and safety. The test software is optimized for use with Kvaser CAN hardware interface products.
