Gallium Nitride (GaN) is starting to see increased adoption for chargers and battery solutions, but this technology can also allow for more compact power supplies, as demonstrated by HDPLEX with its newest 250 W ATX PSU. This model is not only touted as the world’s smallest ATX power supply, but it also comes with a fanless design, making it ideal for silent small form-factor builds or sound production systems.

The new GaN-based PSU is barely longer than a smartphone with a 6-inch screen, measuring 170x50x25 mm. It is a tad longer than SFX and FlexATX solutions, yet it is considerably less bulky. In order to keep things as cool as possible in the absence of an active cooling solution, the PSU comes with an aluminum alloy body that dissipates the heat coming from the two automotive-grade GaN FET in an efficient way.

With the aid of high-quality GaN chips and an innovative LLC+PFC design that is rated for 94% efficiency, HDPLEX managed to achieve a power density of 1.18 W / cm³. Additionally, the PSU is fully modular, offering a standard 24-pin ATX connector, along with dual 8-pin and smaller 4-pin connectors. HDPLEX even allows users to pair two of these PSUs so they can add more powerful components. Thus, one of the PSUs can be used to power the motherboard plus the CPU, while the other can power a mid-range GPU.

HDPLEX estimates that the GaN-based 250 W PSU could start shipping this June for only US$145 and free world-wide shipping.
