Tesla unplugs its latest home wall charger

Tesla owners can now carry the charger with them.

Six years after selling high-power wall connectors that buyers had to hardwire to their homes, Tesla finally caught up with aftermarket suppliers of home charging stations by offering plugs that plug into the wall.

This simplifies installation, regardless of whether the owner needs to have an electrician install a suitable 230 volt garage socket, or whether they already have it.

The new charger can provide up to 40 amps or 9.6 kilowatts of power for all Model S, Model X and remote Model 3s. The mid-range Model 3 and planned standard-range cars can only charge at 32 amps or 7.6 kilowatts.

This should be enough to supplement the charging speed of about 40 miles per hour for long-distance buses. This is significantly slower than Tesla's standard wall connectors, which can operate at up to 80 amps if the house they are connected to has enough juice to support it.

The Tesla charger uses a four-pin NEMA 14-50 wall plug, similar to other 40 amp EVSE wall chargers.

The advantage is that drivers can unplug the charger from the wall and take it with them to charge faster during the journey-as long as they stay where the necessary 14-50 wall plug is needed. This type of plug is usually used in the electric range of large recreational vehicles and shore power. What's more practical is that when the owner moves, it can also be easier to carry the charger with them instead of starting a new setup.

The electrical codes of most jurisdictions in the United States require hard wiring of outdoor charging stations, so the new plug-in wall connectors can only be used in garages.

Tesla is also equipped with a portable 110-volt charging cable that can be plugged into any socket, but it may take several days to fully charge Tesla’s large battery. Tesla is marketing its new wall connector with 14-50 plugs as an alternative to the standard 110-volt charging cable set. It sells for $500, which is the same as a hard-wired wall connector.
