Some Tesla Model Y deliveries delayed due to faulty rear motors - NotebookCheck.net News

Faulty rear motor may be behind Model Y delivery delays as those who wait on their electric SUV to be assembled at Tesla's newest Gigafactory in Berlin report that their orders are slipping for a future date or are cancelled altogether.

Unfortunately, the issue seems to be more serious than the bumper job that one unlucky Model Y buyer in Germany had to wait weeks on end for due to lack of spare parts. The first posting about the problem on a popular German forum called Tesla Drivers and Friends says that Tesla's explanation for their order delay was as follows:

Unfortunately, according to the delivery thread, the MYP deliveries were canceled for today and the beginning of the week. The reason is a security-related defect, which, according to initial findings, cannot be remedied with a software update.

Digging further, Tesla's prospective customers found out that the issue is a mechanical one with the rear wheel motor and their assembled Model Y will still have to wait for the retooled part to come from China as Giga Berlin is not yet making those parts locally. Back in April, Tesla had to issue a recall for intermittent issues with the rear motor on Model 3 batches assembled in China, but unlike those cases the drive units of the Model Y coming off the conveyor belts at Giga Berlin can't be remedied with a software update.

Some of the cars that were already shipped have also been affected by the faulty drive motor as one buyer from Norway reports his Model Y - only three weeks old - is now impossible to drive. Tesla says that it expects the replacement parts to start arriving from mid-July, though it's not clear how many Model Y units have been affected and how long it will take to swap the motors on all of them.

The Gigafactory in Berlin, which was inaugurated by Elon Musk back in March to a great fanfare, ramped up its Model Y production to a 1,000 cars per week for the first time in June, but the motor issue will now affect its productivity in a negative way. Such quality control mishaps are the reason why Tesla's CEO complained that the Gigafactories in Texas and Berlin are big money pits right now, bleeding billions from Tesla because of supply chain issues.
