Turning on the PC remotely is a useful feature for anyone. It breaks the habit of keeping the computer on all the time.

If you are like me, you may set up a computer at home as a file sharing server. Consider the power consumption of keeping the PC on standby all the time. Using this feature will undoubtedly reduce your energy bills.

To turn on your PC, you must have a WOL or Wake-on-Lan compatible PC. If you don't, there are some solutions. Read on to learn how to turn on the PC remotely.

Wake on LAN is an industry standard protocol used to wake up a computer using a network adapter. Wake on LAN helps you keep your device in a low-power mode instead of always on.

When WOL is enabled, the PC will enter "Waiting Mode" when shutting down. Now you can send magic packets from different network devices to this PC to open it. The magic packet should contain the mac address of the PC in standby mode.

Normally, the magic packet is sent on the entire network through the broadcast address. Therefore, if a hacker who knows your mac address information can try to open your PC by sending a magic packet, this is why for security reasons, WOL remains closed by default.

Check your manufacturer's website to see if your motherboard supports Wake on LAN function. Usually, this option is located somewhere in the network or power settings in the BIOS menu.

To enable WOL in the BIOS options, follow these steps:

Once enabled, your network adapter will continue to obtain power from the power source to enter a low-power standby mode. If you are on a laptop, if the device is not plugged into a power source, this will drain your battery. Remember, WOL works; the system needs to be connected to power at all times.

Some of the following steps may require you to enter the PC mac address or IP address, or both.

After adding, click on the PC name to open it.

Use the following steps to enable the WOL function.

Linux has a command line tool that can send magic packets to open the PC.
